Hutchinson County Commissioners Court unanimously voted to lift the ban, which was instituted by the commissioners court on Nov. 5, 2007, following rain falling throughout the day across the county on Tuesday evening and Wednesday.
County Fire Marshal Danny Richards recommended to the commissioners court during the five minute emergency meeting Thursday morning that the ban be lifted.
County Judge Faye Blanks reminded the commission that the burn ban had been scheduled to be on the Monday, May 12, agenda. She asked Richards his opinion on how it should be handled.
“I think we should wait and not reinstitute the burn ban until conditions warrant,” said Richards. “It is very possible that with this rain we have had that things are going to green-up in a few days. This was actually a fairly significant rain and it was countywide.”
Residents who live outside incorporated towns have been primarily affected by the burn ban the past six months. Unable to burn their trash, many have been hauling their trash off, but the build-up has been extensive due to the drought conditions for several months.
Richards said the county was extremely fortunate in that nearly every part of the county received moisture Wednesday.
“If that moisture will green things up over the next few days, that will reduce the fire hazard,” he said. “It would probably be in our interests to just wait and see.”
The item will remain on the Monday agenda to determine weather conditions at that time.
“Burn bans are based on present conditions that you can look and see – not on any forecast,” said Richards. “And right now the conditions are favorable.”
He said those conditions could change in a week, two weeks or three weeks.
“One of the things we like to use as an indicator is how many fire runs are we running,” he said. He said if people are very cautious, use good common sense, and not start any fires, the ban would not need to be re-instituted unless it is an absolute necessity.
Richards said he would like to express his appreciation to the citizens who have adhered to the burn ban and not been burning trash.
He said the burn ban had gone on so long that a second hazard had built up because people hadn’t been able to burn trash. The build-up of trash has not only become a health hazard, said Richards, but also has become a fire hazard.
“It’s my opinion now that conditions are safer, and if people will take this window of opportunity to safely burn their trash, then that will reduce the health hazard and the fire hazard that’s around the people’s residences,” he said. “We don’t know how long we can keep it (the burn ban) off, but this is a small window of opportunity that I feel will help relieve the hazard of the trash building up Lady Comanches Win Area Title

(Photo by Kelly Tull) | by Donna Haynes The West Texas Lady Comanches looked a little shakey Friday night when they lost the first of a three game series 11-9 in Canyon Friday night. The Tribe committed eight errors in the first two innings but battled their way back into the game and had two on with the winning run at the plate when they went down in the bottom of the seventh. However, the girls did a 360 turn Saturday in Plainview when they took care of District Slaton 14-0 in an error free game and then 12-3 in the final game to take the Area Title. Senior pitcher Niiki Treon reached the 200 K milestone for this year after game three. She did an outstanding job for the Tribe Saturday. Jr. pitcher Olivia Contreras hit one over the fence in game two with two on base and had a triple in game three. She also threw out two runners attempting to steal second and picked one who was "sleeping" on first. Sr. Amanda Sargent also had an inside the park home run when she hit the all to the left corner and the fielder dove for the ball and missed. McKenzie St. Charles made several outstanding plays at second and Autumn Hope made a great catch in center field as she was running toward the warning track. Both girls also did a good job at the plate with extra base hits. Chaslyn Tull and Hailey Shipley made stops at short and third, respectively, and both girls also hit two doubles each. Brittney Christman hit three doubles to the right field fence. Kaylyn Franklin had a double and a couple of base hits. Erin Snider did a nice job as courtesy runner for Treon also. The girls made school history with the win as no other team has ever advanced on to the Regional Semifinal game. WT will face Post, runner up in the same District that Slaton is in as District Champ. They will play Friday and Saturday in a three game series in Plainview.Good Luck Lady Comanches in the Regional Quarter Finals Friday and Saturday!
